About the Client
Our client is at the forefront of a revolution in the detection and monitoring of cardiac and pulmonary diseases. Their offerings encompass state-of-the-art digital stethoscopes and an AI-powered detection platform that has garnered global acceptance among a multitude of healthcare professionals. These trailblazing tools not only facilitate early and precise disease detection but also bolster diagnostic certainty. They pave the way for efficacious treatment management, significantly raising the bar for patient care standards.
The Problem
Unlike traditional stethoscopes, our client's innovative solution allows a digital footprint of the primary findings and provides reports on the detection of other heart conditions, such as atrial fibrillation (AFib) and heart murmurs. These findings had to be stored in the EHR, allowing them to be part of the patient record for further evaluation and treatment. Most large health systems had multiple EHRs requiring access to patient demographics and schedules to make this integration possible. Furthermore, the integration needed to be done at the user interface level for the specialists to access the audio files on the cloud.
Our Solution
We defined a comprehensive integration strategy in collaboration with the client, identifying specific data elements, desired workflows, and involved applications.
- Integration Layer: We introduced an integration layer, leveraging Mirth Connect for HL7-based EHR/EMR integrations and enabling data exchange over TCP with site-to-site VPNs. For hospitals and clinics connecting directly over FHIR APIs, an SFTP server was established for data file exports and imports, parsed based on schedulers within the integration layer. This layer acts as the interface between the client’s system and external systems. A standard set of FHIR APIs was exposed, allowing 3rd parties to integrate and build innovative solutions using our client's platform.
- Using OAuth 2.0 authorization framework, we built a SMART on FHIR application framework to allow SSO authentication between EHRs and our client’s platform for advanced analysis of the reports.
- Integration Testing and Validation: We built an extensive testing framework to allow automated tests to verify interoperability, data exchange, and authentication, ensuring system reliability, accuracy, and adherence to HIPAA and other security protocols.
The Impact
The deployment of the integration layer marked a significant leap forward in healthcare data management and interoperability for our client and led to:
- Enhanced Clinical Efficiency: The seamless integration of EHR systems with our advanced healthcare solutions facilitated quicker access to patient data, reducing administrative burdens and allowing clinicians to focus more on patient care.
- Broadened Data Connectivity: By enabling diverse connection methods, including HL7, APIs, and SFTP, we expanded the accessibility of patient data with 40+ EHRs across different healthcare systems, ensuring that vital health information is readily available for decision-making, where and when it is needed.
- Improved Patient Outcomes: The immediate availability of comprehensive patient data and analysis results contributed to more informed clinical decisions, directly impacting patient care quality and outcomes.
- Increased Adoption and Satisfaction: The user-friendly nature of the integrated system, coupled with its robust functionality, drove higher adoption rates among healthcare providers. Clinicians appreciated the ease of accessing and utilizing critical patient data, leading to increased satisfaction with the healthcare IT infrastructure.
- Demonstrable ROI: The solution enabled effective data documentation and analysis capabilities, allowing health systems higher reimbursements and clinical leadership to assess the value and impact of the technology on patient care and operational efficiency.
